An arrival in the countryside.
The first movement of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the Pastoral, bears the heading “Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the countryside.” Rather than simply imitating nature, Beethoven creates a spacious musical world in which an easy-going opening idea, luminous harmonies, and repeated rhythmic figures suggest the pleasure of setting out into the open air.
Steven Light’s arrangement for concert band preserves the movement’s warmth, breadth, and buoyant momentum while sharing Beethoven’s rich orchestral writing across the colors of the wind ensemble.
