Steven Light studied trumpet at the High School of Music & Art, where he first found his love of the recorder and Baroque music. He earned a BA in music performance and education from Goddard College and an MFA in Early Music Performance from Sarah Lawrence College.
Steven’s musical life ranges from early and classical music to traditional repertories from many cultures and the study of music in their cultural settings.
After making Vermont his home for five decades, Steven now lives in the Twin Cities. He performs in recorder ensembles, writes arrangements for the Twin Cities Recorder Guild, and occasionally leads playing sessions. He and Kathy also perform as a duo on their collection of early instruments.
A continuing musical story.
Founded in Vermont in 1974, the Fyre & Lightning Consort brought Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Sephardic, British Isles, and traditional music to audiences throughout New England. Today, Steven and Kathy Light continue that story primarily as a duo in the Twin Cities.
Steven also co-founded the Nisht Geferlach Klezmer Band, a separate sister ensemble whose recordings remain available. He and Kathy also co-directed Gamelan Sulukala, a full court-style Javanese gamelan that continues in Vermont under new leadership.
