Week 12 Due December 4

  • Complete ALL observations (By Dec. 6)
  • Do SM assignments
  • Memorize the following major scales (C - 2 octaves, G - 1 octave, F - 1 octave, D - 2 octaves)
  • Practice the chromatic scale (C-C 2 octaves or higher if possible)
  • Write paper on Double Reeds
  • Read Chapters 5 & 6 (Oboe and Bassoon)
    • Study Questions Chapter 5 (p.170) #1, 3, 4, 12, 16, 18
    • Study Questions Chapter 6 (p.217) #2, 6, 9, 19, 20
  • Choose sax solo (Selection due Nov. 29...playing on Dec. 11-13)
  • Review clarinet and saxophone transpositions (test on Dec. 13)
  • Begin your Woodwind Handbook (Due Dec. 18)

Week 11 Due November 27

  • Complete Sax observation (Due 11/29)
  • Do SM Assignments
  • Memorize the following major scales (C - 2 octaves, G - 1 octave, F - 1 octave, D - 2 octaves)
  • Practice the chromatic scale (C-C 2 octaves or higher if possible)
  • Read Chapter 7 – Foundations...of The Mechanism
    • What did Theobald Boehm do?
    • What do the fingerings in Figure 7.1 have in common?
    • What is the difference between the clarinet and other ww instruments in terms of overblowing?
    • What is "the break" and between which notes does it occut on clarinet, flute and saxophone?
    • Describe "right hand down"
  • Review saxophone transposition
  • Begin to plan your Woodwind Handbook

  • Play the sax!

  • Read Chapter 7 - Foundations...of Tonguing and Articulation
    • Which comes first: Embouchure or tonguing? - why?
    • What causes "squeaking?
    • Does the tongue stop the tone?
    • What is the backward approach to tonguing?

Week 9 Due November 6

  • Begin practicing the saxophone
  • Do SM assignments
  • Write history, development and mechanics of the saxophone paper
  • Read Chapter 4 - Saxophone
    • Answer Q’s: 1, 11, 13, 15, 22

Week 8 Due October 30

  • Do SM exercises
  • Observations - submit write-ups - due before class on Tuesday, Oct. 25
  • Read Chapter 7 – Chapter 7 – Foundations...of Posture, Hands, Holding
    • Answer these questions:
      • What are the hand digit labels?
      • Describe body posture
      • Describe finger position
      • Should the tongue stop the tone?
      • Describe legato tonguing and why it is the priority
      • Why is the backward approach to tonguing valuable?
  • Solos performed next Thursday, November 1 or Tuesday, November 6
  • Scales played either October 30 or November 1 or November 6 (D, Eb, F, G, Bb scales - 1 octave; chromatic 2 octaves c-c)

  • Do SM assignments

  • Read Chapter 7 – Foundations…of Instrument care
    • Answer these questions:
      • When should you swab the instrument?
      • What is dangerous for a wood instrument?
      • What is a tenon?
      • How do you clean a sticky pad?
      • What is a pivot screw?
      • What is a symptom of an unhooked spring?
      • What is a “slave” key?
      • Describe what a key adjustment is.
  • Flute solo selection by October 23
  • Flute lesson observations due October 25
  • Flute Solos, D, Eb, F, G, Bb scales, chromatic - November 1 (can do scales early: Oct. 30)

Week 6 Due October 16 (After break)

  • Write History, Development and Physics of the Flute Paper
  • Read Chapter 2 - Flute
    • Be able to demonstrate Head Joint Practice on P. 23
    • Do the Performance test on P. 25
    • Be able to demonstrate assembly and disassembly, hand position
    • Summarize Flute Tone Development (p. 30-34)
    • What is the backward approach to teaching tonguing?
    • List flute pitch tendencies
    • List solutions for sharpness

Week 5 Due October 2

  • Prepare solo selections
    • Perform Tuesday (10/2)
      • Solo and chromatic scale
  • Complete all SM clarinet assignments
  • Instruments returned after solos
  • Read Ch. 7 Foundations of Assembly and Disassembly
    • Answer these questions:
      • Which instruments need to be wiped clean for easy assembly?
      • Which instruments need cork grease and where do you apply the cork grease?
      • What is a bridge key and why do you need to pay special attention to it when assembling and disassembling?

Week 4 Due Sept. 25 (and 27 and 10/2)

  • Complete SM assignments
  • Choose a solo in SM - Title due to me on Thursday, 9/20
  • Practice C, F & G scales (2 octaves)
  • Practice Chromatic scale (fingering chart)
  • Play African Marching Song both clarinet 1 and 2 parts (SM due on 27th)
  • Playing tests — Tuesday, October 2
    • Solo
    • Chromatic scale E-C (2+ octaves)
  • Read Ch. 7 Foundations of Teaching
    • Answer these questions:
    • What is the usefulness of the “small piece”?
    • What is the reason to work individually with each student?
    • What is a “long tube” note? Give an example on clarinet.
    • What is a “short tube” note? Give an example on clarinet.
    • What is a “Master Assessor?
    • List playing elements you would include in a Performance Test.

Week 3 Due Sept. 18 (and 20)

  • Read Ch. 7 Foundations of Tone
    • Answer these questions
      • Why is Embouchure important?
      • Why is Embouchure flexibility important?
      • Describe “fast air”
      • Listen to one or two professional clarinet players and describe their tone
  • Do SM assignments
  • Complete and write up Clarinet observation by Sept. 20
  • Select solo for approval by Thursday, Sept. 20 before class
  • Solos performed on Thursday 9/27

Week 2 Due Sept. 11

  • Write paper on the History and Development of the Clarinet
  • Complete All Recorder SM tests
  • Be able to demonstrate proper assembly/disassembly, embouchure and hand position on the clarinet
  • Read Chapter 3 - Clarinet (p. 52-101).
    • Be prepared to discuss intonation solutions, tuning, proper hand position, tonguing
    • Answer questions: 1, 2, 5, 9, 13, 17, 26
  • Practice clarinet
    • work on proper playing position, breathing, tonguing, fingering
  • Do Smartmusic exercises
  • Write a critical review of the clarinet lesson book that includes its clarity and accessibility for kids
    • Is it inviting and engaging for kids?
      Does it seem clear?
      Quality of selections
      Are selections current?
      Pacing
    • Be prepared to discuss in class
    • You will also compare and contrast this book to the others throughout the semester

 

Week 1 Due Tuesday, Sept. 4
    • Practice recorder
      • Be able to:
        • Play the major scales C, F and G ascending and descending
        • Play all the natural notes from low C up to high G
    • Write a short paper on the history and development of the recorder
    • Read information in the Acoustics link about WW instruments
    • Make sure SM is working for you and you have enrolled in our SM class
    • Do the assigned SM exercises on recorder
    • Read the Preface and Chapter 1
      • Write a quick chart outlining how you learn/practice your instrument/voice
        • List areas for improvement (in how you practice)
