Who am I anyway?
Steven Light is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Johnson State College Fine and Performing Arts department where he teaches music and music education and directs the JSC Concert Band. He is also the Coordinator of Music Education and Program Director for Unified Arts Education.
Steven recently retired from teaching music in the public schools for over 30 years. He uses the experiences from those years to infuse his teaching with real world issues and solutions. Teaching prospective music teachers is a natural and perfect fit after a career as a middle and high school teacher. He believes in experiential learning and endeavors to make his courses project based with strong components of reflection, critical thinking and discussion.
He is an accomplished performer having earned his BA in Music and Teaching from Goddard College and an MFA in Early Music performance from Sarah Lawrence College. He performs on a wide variety of medieval and Renaissance instruments and plays trumpet and bass in Vermont's only Klezmer band. He has performed throughout Vermont, New England, New York and Montreal. He also sings and has been a guest conductor of the Onion River Chorus in Montpelier.
He has guest conducted numerous Vermont Middle and High School District Festival Bands and enjoys working with young musicians immensely.
When he's not singing, playing, conducting or teaching Steven loves being with his wife, Kathy, and family. He also likes to garden, hike, bike, weave and work in his wood shop.
He also like really corny, stupid music jokes...
