Philosophy of Music Education - Continued...

In order to become successful musicians, some students will need more support than others. If someone has their heart set on learning to play and understand music, that person should be given the opportunity and should, under no circumstances, be discouraged from doing so. If the student is too young to begin learning how to play an instrument, the teacher should not discourage, but explain that it is not yet time. The instructor could offer substitutions, such as recorders, xylophones, and simple percussion instruments. I do believe that musical talent comes more naturally to some people, but I also believe it can be acquired through hard work and practice. A teacher should never give more attention to a gifted student than a student that lacks natural talent. Everyone should have the chance to experience music for themselves.

Music education is an extremely important part of every level of every school system, and despite funding cuts and a lack of support, it will continue to be. Music is simply another route one can take to gain knowledge of his or her country’s history and culture, as well as that of the world. Music is everywhere. All anyone has to do is stop and listen and they will hear music. It’s been a way of communicating and telling stories for centuries and scientists spent years studying the science behind it. There really are no limits to how much one can learn about it, and a lot of that depends on how much can be taught and learnt about it in school. Music is an important part of everyday life that everyone should have the chance to learn about.
