Lesson: Indian Music

 

Objectives:

  1. Introduce Indian Drumming concepts and sounds
  2. Gain an understanding of the differences and similarities between "western music" and Indian music
  3. Understand the underlying principles of Raga and Tala
  4. Be able to recognize Indian music

 

Materials:

            South Indian Drum Syllable handout

            Recordings of sample music

            Web site references for further study

 

Activities

  1. Listen to sample piece (Vina and Mridangam)
  2. Listen to only Mridangam
  3. Show pictures of the instruments Vina Mridangam
  4. Discuss why Indian music sounds the way it does
  5. Practice syllables Sample
  6. Sing (Say) sample drum syllable pieces
  7. Compose original pieces in small groups using drum syllables and perform

 

Assessment

  1. Students will be able to identify Indian music from other cultures' music
  2. Students will have developed listening skills
  3. Students will have broken down some cultural barriers
