Week 10 - Due April 16 (and beyond...)

  • Write Major Paper on Middle Level Teaching Strategies (Due 4/16)
    • Read article on Resources page: Agenda For Excellence in Music at the Middle Level and find other references for your ML paper - include bibliography (Due 4/16)
    • Read Chapter 12 (Due 4/16)
    • Be ready to summarize in class

Assignments for rest of semester:

  • Paper on Arts Advocacy in the Public Schools and the Value of Music Education (Due 4/23)

  • Complete Curriculum Design Project (Due 4/30)

    • Create list of non-performing high school courses to appeal to non “music” kids (Due 4/30)

  • Special Topics Day - Think of, put in Google folder with initials and be ready to ask 3-5 questions about TEACHING (preferably but not only HS) (Due 5/7)

Week 9 - Due April 2

  • Read Chapters 15 & 16
    • Chap 15 - Q’s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
    • Chap 16 - Q’s 1, 2, 3
  • Brainstorm big list of non-performing high school classes to appeal to non “music” kids
  • Write original lesson plan (Due: )
    • include detailed student activities
    • include assessments for each goal and objective
      • what exactly are you assessing and how will you assess it?
      • Include the assessment document
      • Try to embed at least part of the assessments
    • The lesson should not be teaching music performance although that can be the “vehicle” for the lesson

Week 8 - Due March 26

  • Read Chapters 11 & 13
    • Chap. 11 Q’s 4, 5
    • Chap. 13 Q’s 1, 3, 4, 7
  • Write and be ready to present as if you are teaching it a lesson that uses elements of Critical Thinking/Listening/Music Making/Problem Solving.

Week 7 - Due March 19

  • Read chapter 14 Q's 2,3,5,6,7
  • Read articles (on Resources webpage):
    • Music Teaching and Critical Thinking
    • Music Listening and Critical Thinking
    • Thinking Skills in the Music Classroom
  • Design a unit plan part of which includes Critical thinking (critical listening, critical music making, creating)
    • Step 1: Think of a topic
    • Choose HS class for the lesson (NOT performing ensemble)
    • Step 2: Write goals and objectives for the unit
    • Step 3: Come up with ideas for 5 lessons
    • Step 4: Write name, description and standards addressed for each lesson
      • Make sure the unit includes elements of all standards

Week 6 March 5 - Due March 12

  • Read Chapters 9 and 10
    • Chap. 9 - #’s 2, 3, 6
    • Chap. 10 - #’s 3, 4
  • Your school is having an “Academic Fair”. All subjects and classes are asked to participate and contribute however they would like. The entire community is invited for the event on an evening from 7-9pm.
    • What would you do for each of these classes you teach?
      • Band
      • Chorus
      • Any Non-performing class

Week 5 Feb. 19 - Due March 5 ***Now due March 12*** but no extensions!

  • Write multi-cultural (“World music”) lesson plan using template in SMM Google folder
    • Use the “Lesson design and reflection questions” as a guide in writting (included along with Standards on LP Template)
    • Practice teaching it - be thorough
    • Make sure your goals & objectives and assessments match up
      • Include methods of assessment (how you are going to know if they learned?)
      • Include a written rubric
    • Be prepared to "talk through" the lesson completely
  • Read Chapters 7 Instrumental Music & 8 Teenage Singers
    • Chap. 7 Q’s: 1, 5, 6 and PROJECT Q #3
    • Chap. 8 Q’s: 1, 3
  • Begin to brainstorm a list of courses that will address our categorized "big list"
  • Revise your Philosophy paper

Week 4 Feb. 12 - Due Feb. 19

  • Read Philosophy articles and chapters on Resource page
    • Struggle means learning
    • Reforming Secondary Music
    • Philosophical Foundations
    • Prelude to Music Education
  • Write your Philosophy of Secondary Music Education
    • Begin with your Definition of Music
    • 3-4 Belief Statements (specific to Secondary Music)
    • Then expand
  • Answer these questions: REALLY think about this!
    • Should band and chorus classes be scheduled at the same/different times? Why?
      • If same time - what about students who do both?
      • Should there be 1 or multiple sections of an ensemble (because of scheduling)?
      • Are there different answers for vocal/instrumental?
      • Make a table of pluses and minuses

Week 3 - Feb. 5 - Due Feb. 12

  • Reading- Chapters #6 & 17 *(NOT #7!)*
    • Questions: Chap. #6: 3, 4, 5, 6
    • Questions: Chap. #17: 2, 3, 4, 6
  • Add more to the Google doc Curriculum Big List
    • Do a little research to come up with valid, important"big idea" skills, concepts, etc. you think students should know and be able to do.
    • Refer to the National Core Standards for guidance as well
  • Find 2 more examples of HS Curricula you like
    • Be prepared to present it and summarize what you think of it

Week 2 Jan. 29 - Due: Feb. 5
